Deja vu ...

Have you ever experienced something ... then it feels all over that it happened before? the answer for me is ... yes ... a million times!

I will recount only one incident that happened to me yesterday: I was sitting in church, listening to Raed (our youth group servant and leader) share his sermon, when i decided to look at my watch, and as I did that, Raed said "... and Peter not only denied Him, but also cursed and swore at Jesus ..." . Right there! stop! I felt "and surprisingly knew" that I have experienced this before ... same setting, same church, same person talking, same line, and same watch (although it is 2 months old!)

I don't want to even research about it ... but its just a funny feeling.

Haven't i seen you before? ;)

Hmm... déjà vu. Déjà vu if believed in strongly warrants the notion of reincarnation. I'm not sure if I'm opening a can of worms here by saying that I believe in reincarnation.

Some people easily disclaim deja vu by saying that certain images are stored away and are retrieved when something similar comes into play. In your case Mena, the church and sermon would be something that wouldn’t even be in your subconcsious mind as it is something that you do quite often. That would be easy to support the above argument...

But...I was in turkey once for a holiday and it was the first time I was there. In some historic sights (especially the Hagia Sophia church) where I could hear voices and be drawn to the place almost as if I belonged there. In the church, tears came to my eyes when I touched walls and feelings came over me that I couldn’t really explain. Throughout my time in Istanbul I felt like I was returning home (yet it truly was the first time there!). In the back streets of the souks I never once felt claustrophobic, the feeling of being a tourist or the feeling of being lost! I love the smell, the people, the feeling I get when I’m there. And to this day I cannot explain why I felt drawn (and still do feel very drawn) to the incredibly magical city of Istanbul. (my father says that it’s like Egypt and that’s why I love it..hehehe)

The above though is an extreme example of deja vu.

Although I am unsure what Christianity specifically thinks of déjà vu and reincarnation, I am pretty sure that my train of thinking would be shunned. The beliefs that I have been brought up with the notion of ashes to ashes, dust to dust and the rising of the soul to heaven.

I have come to believe in the Hindu based belief of reincarnation - only because I think like a scientist: even for the most organised being (ie God), we have to be running out of room for the filing system of souls! Even though I know souls do not take up space. But then again…matter is neither created nor destroyed. To me, a soul has existed since time has existed and it cannot be destroyed by death. We recycle the soul so that the cycle of life continues.

I also see it as a punishment system – you are brought back to earth as a punishment (I don’t believe in hell). This is in line with the Hindi caste system of being born into a lower caste due to bad deeds in one’s previous life.

Sometimes I sit in my garden and watch pairs of butterflies flutter together. And then I wonder…were they here before me? Are what they’re seeing now going to be déjà vu for them in their next life?

The thing is Mena, if you really do believe in what you felt in your sermon meeting (and I do believe that you did feel it) – then it is déjà vu. But how can you explain it?

Funnily enough, deja vu visits me increasingly less as I get older - is it because I now automatically realise that its my subconscious mind bringing a memory back before I even consciously think about it? No...I'd like to think I was still a princess in turkey some centuries ago...;)

I currently feel tired, sleepy and edgy. I feel fat and unhealthy because I haven't excercised in a week. I had pasta for lunch and three coffees so my stomach feels like a burning acid machine. I am staring at the clock because I can't be productive anymore. Right now, my team mate is staring at my screen and he realizes I am blogging. He understands the way I feel. Have I felt this way before? Yes,almost once a week after a burn out - now that's deja vu for me :D.

Interesting topic antimena - but other than the above, I am sorry to say I have no other exciting deja vu incidents :).

Incarnation? In my last job, a friend of mine believed with her heart and soul that she was reicarnated. She had no clue who however but she kept on saying she saw and heard things in certain places and then realizing I was a Christian, she gave me a book on reincarnation. Needless to say the book didn't contribute much to my beliefs. God doesn't need space for the souls he created - we're not wheat. There was a whole lot of attention given to us when we were made right at the moment of conception - like an artist, carefully envisioning and bringing to life every new piece.

I do not have a scientific explanation for de ja vu except the one Jacqueline mentioned - retrieving past memories - and I think that makes enough sense for now :).

John: I can't believe you're taking after everybody else.Sniff.Sniff. I only wanted to wish you a Happy Birhtday (and of course to complain about your insensitivity as a group :P)

Antimena: I totally disagree with the definition of deja vu as it relates to me. This is a biased definition - you need to consult more, neutral scientific sources :P.

The world out there: I guess this group doesn't really comprehend deja vus after all -let alone believe in them! *Eyes Rolling Up in Frustration*

A good reading about the topic ...

I agree with the part in the article that talks about the "deja rêvé" which attributes some deja vu situations to previous dreams with some common elements with the current experience. The best definition of the phenomenon can be a Memory Anomaly.

However for me, as you know, the "Jamais vu" happens to me much more frequently :D
